A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national works. They were executed at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
