Our planet is facing challenges, however there is hope. A new award from the science, music and arts festival Starmus will motivate the public to take action.

The Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will honor to pay tribute to the renowned scientist and conservationist who passed away recently. It is designed to celebrate those who advocate for life on Earth.

Award Details

The inaugural winners are slated for announcement during the Starmus VIII festival in the Canary Islands, which will run from October 17th to 22nd next year.

Reports indicate that Jane Goodall, who was a Starmus advisory board member, had endorsed the medal's establishment. “The idea behind this medal, and Starmus being entrusted to oversee it, was Jane's wish,” a representative said. “She expressed she would like for this to occur. This is likely due to the close relationship she shared with the festival.”

“This medal will recognize sustainable programmes carried out to build an environment improved for people, animals and the environment and offer support to continue such efforts,” said a family member.

Format and Inspiration

One of the founders of Starmus noted that the medal – unveiled at a prestigious venue – would probably encompass various fields.

“The intent is for it to be inspired by the Stephen Hawking award honoring scientific outreach established exactly 10 years ago,” he explained. Jane Goodall was a recipient of that award.

Sharing thoughts about the future of the planet, one figure remarked, “Honestly, it is difficult to maintain optimism. The current political climate globally represents a war on science. So this significantly hampers collective action.”

“Realistically, the prospects aren't particularly bright which means we need to commence thinking again, more deeply regarding the impact of human activity. This concern encompasses not just global warming, that’s the entire manner in which we interact with our environment.”

A Call to Action

As a result, observers believe it was an opportune moment to follow Goodall’s example. “It is believed that in bestowing the prize, we will be considering this core philosophy that Jane embodied – that was her foremost concern, to transform our relationship with fellow creatures around us.”

Another key issue currently was highlighted of misinformation. The central topic of next year’s festival will be “the search for truth”.

“We realised that factual reality has become a matter of debate when politics are involved. This is an alarming trend,” it was said. “The science of climate is a science; you cannot have any influence by political agendas in this field.”

Hope and Determination

The hope remains that this honor will inspire positive change. “It focuses on inspiring individuals to get involved and to care and to strive in that direction, really. Whether or not we’re optimistic, we have to focus on working all that is possible,” it was added. “Accept the possibility of failure, but you still have to work toward success.”

A family member engaged in environmental protection shared confidence that “given direction and when empowered, people are capable of being responsible caretakers of Earth”, pointing to the initiatives of an institute that, in addition to its projects, empowers young people become engaged with their community, animals, and the natural world.

“As Jane Goodall often emphasized, our daily actions are significant and it is up to us what type of impact we make,” it was stated. “It is not too late and the Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will provide inspiration and increase understanding regarding constructive efforts that are being undertaken.”
