The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to review the score on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves the manager's team into third place in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at both ends of the field

Following a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a only attempts on target, Frank chose the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, combining well with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off slightly and fans headed to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of established strikers - had netted just one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham box.

What next for both teams?

Everton: The team travel to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.

Spurs: Spurs go to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup match against Newcastle.
